Choosing the colour of the button or lamp
| Red | Emergency, stop or off; a danger or a fault that needs action now |
| Yellow | Abnormal condition, or a need to step in (for example an overload warning) |
| Green | Normal or safe condition; start or on |
| Blue | An action that must be taken, such as reset |
| White, grey or black | No specific meaning: general use, such as on, off, jog or power on |
This is the usual meaning in IEC 60073 and IEC 60204-1 (machine wiring). Those standards are not part of the folder this site was checked against, so confirm the colours against the current editions for your machine.
