What Traffolyte labels are
A Traffolyte-style label is a two-layer plastic laminate. The top layer is one colour and the core is a contrasting colour. A laser engraves through the top layer to reveal the core, so the lettering is permanent and sharp. This is why engraved labels are the usual choice on switchboards and plant: the text does not rub off, peel or fade.
In Australia the name is used loosely, so you will also see the same labels called Gravoply, Lamacoid, engraving laminate, two-ply labels, or two-colour plastic tags. If that is what you are searching for, you are in the right place.
Colours and thickness
- White with black text, black with white text
- Blue, red and green with white text; yellow with black text
- Thickness: 1.6 mm for most labels, 0.7 mm where a thinner label is needed
- Brushed metal look: gold and silver, for nameplates and signs
Colours follow common practice: red for mains and danger, yellow for caution, green for protected circuits, blue for information.
What you can put on them
- Your own text, in a choice of fonts, on one or more lines
- Logos, QR codes and serial or sequential numbers

For ready-made sets, see the 800 label switchboard kit, compliance label kits by state, control panel legend plates and safety and warning signs. For tags that must survive salt, chemicals or heat, use engraved stainless steel tags.
Questions about Traffolyte labels
What are Traffolyte labels?
Traffolyte is the name many Australian electricians and engineers use for engraved two-colour plastic labels. The label is a two-layer laminate: a coloured face over a contrasting core. The laser cuts through the face to reveal the core, so the text is part of the label, not printed on it. The same product is also sold as Gravoply, Lamacoid, engraving laminate or 2-ply labels.
What colours do you make?
White with black text, black with white text, blue with white text, red with white text, yellow with black text and green with white text, in 1.6 mm and 0.7 mm thickness. A brushed metal look in gold and silver is also available.
How long do engraved plastic labels last outdoors?
Because the text is engraved, not printed, it does not peel, smudge or fade the way a sticker or printed label can. Outdoor life still depends on the material and how much sun and weather the label sees, so for harsh coastal or chemical sites consider an engraved stainless steel tag.
Can I put a logo, QR code or serial numbers on them?
Yes. The designer supports your own text and fonts, logos, QR codes and numbered series, with corner radius and mounting holes, and shows a live preview before you order.
Can I order one label, or only a batch?
You can order any quantity. For a long list, import a spreadsheet and the designer builds every label from it.
Why not just print the labels?
Printed and sticker labels suit short-term use. Engraved two-colour labels are the permanent choice for switchboards, valves, cables and equipment that need to stay readable for years. The trade-off is that engraving shows one colour on a contrasting base, so it cannot reproduce full-colour artwork.
